Scholar Spotlight: Scott Nguyen
Senior at Iowa State University
“I’ve been able to really focus on developing myself professionally and growing as a person. I have also been able to be very active on campus. This opportunity showed me the importance of giving back and making a difference in the lives of others.”
What opportunities or experiences have you been able to take part in that you might not have been able to without the scholarship?
I have been able to be very active on campus with major-related clubs and extracurriculars. I have been active on campus all four year and have been able to pursue research, hold leadership positions, travel for conferences and study abroad. I’ve had an opportunity to be involved with the following:
- Vietnamese Student Association
- Pi Alpha Phi Fraternity Inc.
- NCORE/ISCORE Project
- Undergraduate Researcher
- Multicultural Greek Council President
- McNair Scholar
What is the most interesting thing you have done or are planning to do to explore or gain experience in your career field?
I’m on a research team trying to recreate a solution for the 6th Global Trajectory Optimization Competition. It’s been super cool learning new things about how to optimize space trajectories! I’m also in the McNair Scholars Program, which is a program that prepares students to obtain a PhD. My goal is to perform research in spacecraft trajectory navigation and to one day teach.
How are you sharing your time and/or talents with others now? How do you hope to do so in the future?
I tutor, volunteer and cook for my community. It’s important for me to remember where I came from and to give back to the communities that made me who I am today.
Where is your favorite place to study?
Math 400, which is the math lounge. No one knows about this place except for the math majors, of which there are only 100 or so. I found the lounge while walking around Carver. It’s the best place to study and nap because it has comfy couches and even a small kitchen!
