Scholar Spotlight: Austin Heidbreder

“I’m very excited to do as much chemistry research as possible as I prepare to attend graduate school and continue studying chemistry.”

What is your favorite class and why?

My favorite class so far has been descriptive inorganic chemistry because it was advanced enough to be challenging, and it answered a lot of “why” questions that other chemistry classes had not gotten into.

What advice would you give to an incoming freshman?

Everyone says to explore groups and clubs, and they’re right. It’s the best way to meet friends and people like you. Don’t be afraid to be sociable.

Where do you see yourself in five years? 10 years?

After I complete my Ph.D., I see myself doing chemistry research in areas I’m interested in.

What do like most about your school?

UNI is the perfect size. It’s small enough to be personal and big enough to have many opportunities.

What’s a fun fact we should know about you?

I’ve been learning to play guitar for the last two years, which has been a lot of fun.

“My first year in college has been amazing. I was able to get involved with intramural sports, Iowa Wishmakers and Dance Marathon because you took the financial burden off my back and allowed for me to get the most out of my college experience. I’ve been able to focus on school and not worry about working which has allowed me to get the most out of my education. I was also able to fulfill one of my dreams before going to college; I was able to pay for a child’s Make-A-Wish trip to Disney World with my graduation money because of your generosity and covering the expenses of my education. “I want to personally thank the Bright Foundation for this year. I would not be nearly as successful without their financial support. I come from an incredibly humble background and the financial stability they have given me in the form of this scholarship has allowed me to commit my highest potential to my classwork. “I’m a student at DMACC and this award is extremely helpful and appreciated. All this past semester, I’ve been working and going to school while barely making it by.
